What Causes Snoring?

Sleep Apnea and Snoring occur when throat muscles overly relax during sleep, making the lower jaw fall back and press against the airway, leading to its partial or complete obstruction. This blockage causes breathing pauses, known as apneas, ranging from a few seconds to minutes. The brain detects oxygen deprivation and awakens the person momentarily to restart breathing, usually with gasping, choking, or snoring sounds. These interruptions can happen many times overnight, breaking the normal sleep pattern and resulting in daytime fatigue, concentration problems, high blood pressure, and other issues.

    FAQs

Can I use the Sleep Guard if I have sleep apnea or other sleep disorders?

Yes, the Sleep Guard can be used for individuals with sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, but it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using it as a standalone treatment. While the Sleep Guard may help alleviate symptoms like snoring, it may not address the underlying causes of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. Your healthcare provider can evaluate your condition, recommend appropriate treatment options, and determine if the Sleep Guard is suitable for your specific needs.

How long does it take to get used to wearing the Sleep Guard?

The time it takes to get used to wearing the Sleep Guard can vary from person to person. Some individuals may adjust to wearing it relatively quickly, within a few nights or a week, while others may require more time. It's normal to experience some initial discomfort or awkwardness when wearing the Sleep Guard, but this typically improves with continued use as you become accustomed to the device. Gradually increasing the duration of wear each night can also help with the adjustment process. If you experience persistent discomfort or difficulty adjusting to the Sleep Guard, consult with your healthcare provider for guidance.

How Do I Fit The Sleep Guard?

Do not pull apart: Leave the Sleep Guard on the factory setting of 3. Please do not pull apart prior to molding.

Boil water: Fill a medium-sized pot with water ¾ to the top and bring to the boil on the stove.

Carefully remove from heat: After the water has come to the boil, turn the heat off and ensure the pot has then been carefully removed from the heated stove top element.

Timer ready for 30 seconds: Have your timer ready and only once the water has physically stopped bubbling, place your Sleep Guard on the surface of the boiled water for a strict 30 seconds (do not submerge the device, you want Sleep Guard floating at the top so it doesn’t sink or touch the sides of the pot).

Carefully remove from water: Without applying too much pressure with the tongs, carefully remove the Sleep Guard by picking up the device from the back adjustment section (this is the part that fits to the back of your mouth).

Rinse off & mould to mouth: Dip the Sleep Guard into a bowl of room temp water for 3 seconds to rinse residual hot water off, slowly position in your mouth and then bite down for 30 seconds. Suck in to form a vacuum and use your fingers to push the side of your gums so the warmed material molds to your teeth and jaw.

Set the mold & you're ready to use: Remove your Sleep Guard from your mouth and place into a cup of cold water, this will set the mold. You are now ready to begin using your Sleep Guard. Start using at the factory setting 3. After using for two nights and becoming used to wearing your Sleep Guard, (if necessary) gradually adjust in 1mm increments until your snoring starts to subside. We suggest you use your Sleep Guard for 2 hours per night for the first 2-3 nights prior to wearing all night.

Should I Wear the Sleep Guard All Night?

We suggest you use your SleepMD Sleep Guard for 2 hours per night for the first 2-3 nights prior to wearing all night.

How does the Sleep Guard compare to traditional CPAP machines in terms of effectiveness?

The Sleep Guard offers a different approach to addressing snoring and sleep apnea compared to traditional CPAP machines. While CPAP machines use continuous positive airway pressure to keep the airway open during sleep, the Sleep Guard works by gently repositioning the jaw to prevent airway obstruction caused by soft tissue collapse. Both methods can be effective, but some users find the Sleep Guard more comfortable and easier to use than CPAP machines. Ultimately, the effectiveness of each device may vary depending on individual needs and preferences.

Can I use the Sleep Guard if I have dental issues or wear dentures?

The Sleep Guard is designed to accommodate various dental conditions, including dental issues and dentures. However, it's essential to consult with your dentist before using the Sleep Guard, especially if you have specific dental concerns. Your dentist can provide personalized advice and ensure that the Sleep Guard is suitable for your oral health needs.

How do I clean and maintain the Sleep Guard?

Cleaning and maintaining your Sleep Guard are crucial for its effectiveness and longevity. After each use, rinse the Sleep Guard with warm water and mild soap, then gently brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the material. Additionally, store your Sleep Guard in its provided case when not in use to prevent contamination and damage. Regularly inspect the Sleep Guard for signs of wear and tear, and replace it as needed to ensure optimal performance.

What material is the Sleep Guard made of, and is it safe for long-term use?

The Sleep Guard is typically made of medical-grade materials that are safe for long-term use. These materials are often soft and flexible, allowing for a comfortable fit while still providing effective support for the jaw. Additionally, many Sleep Guard products are latex-free to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper care and maintenance to ensure the longevity of the Sleep Guard and to maximize its safety and effectiveness over time. If you have specific concerns about the materials used in the Sleep Guard or its suitability for long-term use, consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
